Biography of Leonid Stadnik

Leonid Stepanovich Stadnik, the Ukrainian man who became famous for his height, was born in 1971 in the village of Podolyantsi, Chudnivskyi district, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. His height is 257 cm and he weighs 200 kg. Previously, Stadnik was mentioned in the Guinness World Records as the tallest person alive. However, on August 20, 2008, the editor-in-chief of the Guinness Book, Craig Glenday, announced that the title of the tallest person in the world was returning to Chinese man Bao Xishun. This decision was made after Stadnik refused to undergo the new measurement procedure required by the Guinness Book. In order to remain the record holder, Leonid Stadnik would have had to allow multiple measurements of his height within 24 hours under the supervision of a representative from the Guinness Book. The average height would then be chosen as the final result. As a result, the Ukrainian man, whose height according to the Ukrainian Book of Records is 257 cm, enjoyed the title for only a few months.

Medical Condition and Personal Life

Leonid Stadnik began to experience excessive growth after undergoing brain surgery at the age of 12. He developed a tumor on his pituitary gland, which started producing excessive amounts of growth hormones. His variant of acromegaly was diagnosed as gigantism by his doctors. Twenty years after the surgery, doctors discovered that Stadnik's tumor had mysteriously disappeared.

In the spring of 2008, Ukrainian entrepreneurs bought Stadnik a satellite dish and gifted him a computer with internet access. The giant from the village of Podolyantsi met with the third Ukrainian president, Victor Yushchenko, at the Feofania Clinical Hospital, where Leonid's mother was being treated by the capital's doctors. Yushchenko spoke with Stadnik and his mother Galina, bringing oranges, bananas, and lemons to their hospital room.

Stadnik's personal life reveals that he was a veterinarian surgeon until 2003. He excelled in sports and received a gold medal from his school and a red diploma from the university. He blames his doctors for his gigantism, claiming that they caused complications during the tumor removal surgery. Stadnik did not serve in the military, not because of his height, as the conscription board did not pay any attention to it, but rather due to his flat feet.

Leonid Stepanovich leads a simple life. He does not drink, smoke, or use foul language. Stadnik prefers to spend his time with a book, from which he gains knowledge and a refined way of speaking. The rural community respects their only bookworm in the district, who often yearns for worthy conversational partners capable of discussing topics beyond just alcohol.

In the spring of 2008, Yushchenko presented Stadnik with a Chevrolet car.
