Early Life and Education

Leonid Vasilievich Timoshenko was born on June 6, 1921, in the village of Lovin, Ukraine. During World War II, he served in the defense force and was awarded the "For the Defense of Kiev" medal.

In 1948, Timoshenko graduated from the Kyiv Medical Institute and went on to complete a clinical residency in obstetrics and gynecology (1948-1952). He earned a doctorate in medicine in 1965, with a dissertation on "Weakness of Labor."

Academic and Research Career

Timoshenko held faculty positions at the Kyiv Medical Institute (1961-1964), the Lviv Medical Institute (1964-1971), and the Kyiv State Institute for Advanced Medical Studies (1971-1995). From 1995 to 1999, he served as a professor at the Military Surgery Department of the Military Medical Institute.

His research focused on:

- Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn
- Neurohumoral regulation of uterine contractions
- Risk factors for pregnancy complications
- Complex prenatal care and labor pain management
- Uterine bleeding in obstetrics
- Fetal and neonatal asphyxia
- Adaptation system in pregnant and gynecological patients

Timoshenko received numerous awards and honors, including:

- Member-Correspondent of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1974)

- Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1992)

Personal Life and Legacy

Timoshenko was married to Lyudmila Ivanovna Timoshenko (1930-2000). They had two daughters, Olesya and Natalia.

Timoshenko established a renowned scientific school and mentored 21 doctoral and 92 candidate students. He passed away in 2012, leaving behind a legacy as a respected and influential figure in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
