Early Life and Education
Karl Karlovich Rauchfus was born in 1835 in St. Petersburg, Russia. From 1844 to 1851, he studied at the Petrischule, a prestigious gymnasium in the city.
Medical Training and Early Career
In 1857, Rauchfus graduated from the Medico-Surgical Academy with a focus on pediatrics. Starting in 1860, he specialized in laryngology, the study of the larynx. From 1858 to 1868, he served as a prosector and physician at the Imperial St. Petersburg Foster Home.
Founding of Children's Hospitals
In 1869, Rauchfus played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Children's Hospital of Prince Peter of Oldenburg, later renamed the Rauchfus Hospital. He was appointed director and chief physician of the hospital, where he implemented innovative systems for isolating potentially contagious patients.
In 1872-76, Rauchfus designed and supervised the construction of the Children's Hospital of St. Vladimir in Moscow. This hospital became a model for modern pediatric healthcare facilities, and it was later renamed after Ivan V. Rusakov.
Clinical and Research Contributions
Rauchfus made significant contributions to the field of pediatrics through his clinical work and publications. He introduced intubation for croup and investigated diphtheria, using serum therapy for its treatment. His scientific articles appeared in esteemed journals such as "Gerhardt's Handbuch der Kinderkrankheiten" and "Virchow's Archiv."
