Biography of Leopolds Ozolins

Leopolds Ozolins is a Latvian politician and a member of the Latvian Parliament. He has served as a deputy in the 6th, 8th, and 9th Saeima of Latvia, representing the coalition "Union of Greens and Farmers". Ozolins is also the Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs.

Early Life and Education

Leopolds Ozolins was born on June 26, 1937, in Riga, Latvia. He graduated from the Riga Medical Institute in 1960 and went on to work as a surgeon in Ventspils. He also held positions as a senior researcher at the Institute of Traumatology and a physician in the sanitary aviation. Ozolins actively participated in rescue operations following the earthquake in Armenia.

Political Career

In 1989, Ozolins was elected as a People's Deputy of the USSR. He later became a member of the Jurmala City Council in 1994 and a member of the Saeima representing the alliance "Tevzemei un Brivibai" in 1995. Ozolins has authored several scientific works in his field.

Controversial Views on Homosexuality

In 2005, Leopolds Ozolins expressed negative views towards the initiative to hold a gay pride parade in Riga. He referred to homosexuality as a "severe spiritual deformity" and stated that it contributes to pedophilic crimes and the spread of deadly diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis C. His comments were deemed offensive by gay rights activist I. Kozlovskis, who filed a lawsuit against Ozolins. The case was initially dismissed by the Jurmala City Court but subsequently challenged by the plaintiff.

Other Activities and Initiatives

Leopolds Ozolins has been an outspoken advocate for condemning the crimes of communist totalitarianism and the occupation of the USSR. He believes that Russia should compensate Latvia with at least 20 billion dollars for the years it spent under Soviet rule. Ozolins has also proposed the establishment of a monument in Riga dedicated to the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

Criticism and Response

Leopolds Ozolins' activities have faced criticism from representatives of the "For Human Rights in a United Latvia" movement. The chairman of the coalition in the Saeima, Yakov Pliner, described his demand for compensation from Russia as absurd. Ozolins has been accused of attempting to deny naturalized citizens the right to vote for the first two years after receiving citizenship. In response, Ozolins denies being against naturalization or harboring any animosity towards the Russian-speaking population, claiming that his critics are exploiting the term "Russian-speaking" for their own agenda.
