Lazar Koliševski, a Macedonian Statesman
Early Life and Political ActivismLazar Koliševski was a prominent Macedonian politician and one of the closest associates of Josip Broz Tito. He was born in 1914 and joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) in 1935. Koliševski held organizational positions within the party and was a delegate at the Fifth Conference of the CPY.
Role in World War II and Macedonia
In 1941, Koliševski arrived in Macedonia amidst the Nazi occupation. He played a crucial role in the reconstruction of the Macedonian Communist Party and was elected its Secretary. However, he was captured by Bulgarian authorities and sentenced to death. His sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, which he served in Bulgaria.
Post-War Career in Macedonia
Upon his release in 1944, Koliševski returned to Macedonia and resumed his duties as Secretary of the CPY in Macedonia. He remained in this position until 1963, overseeing the rebuilding and development of the region.
Prime Minister and Senior Positions
Koliševski was elected the first Prime Minister of Macedonia in 1945. He later held various senior positions, including Chairman of the Macedonian Government, President of the Macedonian Assembly, and Chairman of the Federal Committee of the Socialist Alliance of Working People of Yugoslavia (SAWPY).
Leadership after Tito's Death
Following Tito's death in 1980, Koliševski, as Vice-President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), became the acting President of the SFRY. He held this position briefly until 1980 when he handed it over to Cvijetin Mijatović.
Legacy and Recognition
Koliševski received the title of People's Hero of Yugoslavia for his contributions to the war effort and the development of Macedonia. He authored memoirs that were published in Skopje, preserving his experiences and insights into the history of the region.
