Biography of Leos Carax

Leos Carax, born on November 21, 1960, is a French director. His real name is Alexandre Dupont, but he adopted the pseudonym Leos Carax, which is an anagram of the names Alex and Oscar.

Early Career

Leos Carax gained attention with his very first feature film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1983), a strange mystery shot in black and white with an English title. Critics immediately recognized the Godardian traditions of fragmented editing and the absence of a clear screenplay, bestowing Carax with the title of the young French cinema's main hope. In his film, it seemed as if nothing was happening, with wandering and unreal characters, such as the protagonist played by Denis Lavant, who had the appearance of a homeless person or a criminal. Lavant's character was terrifying, even infernal, but the director insisted that Lavant was his alter ego, so he cast the actor in two other films, even giving him his real name, Alexandre, in the next film "Bad Blood" (1986), which won an award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1987.

Breakthrough and Collaboration with Juliette Binoche

Carax attempted to merge a detective story about a deadly virus threatening the world with a lyrical and philosophical subtext of a postmodern fairytale. The contemporary urban landscape was populated by not entirely ordinary young people, and not only young ones. However, their main problem was still love, and the director portrayed this with a disturbing display of his own individuality. His muse at the time was Juliette Binoche, whom he continued to cast in his film "Les Amants Du Pont-Neuf" (1992), which also had a fantastical element. The film featured vagrants, and the boy and girl loved each other despite the obstacles thrown at them by fate. However, it was after the three-year-long filming process for this movie that Carax and Binoche ended their relationship in real life.
