Background and Education

Born on August 28, 1960, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the current NASA astronaut received his education from Monte Vista High School in Danville, California, in 1978. He subsequently pursued higher studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry in 1983. Continuing his academic pursuits, he obtained a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1985, and a Doctorate degree in Chemistry from the same institution in 1987.

Professional Experience

Before embarking on his astronautical journey, the astronaut worked at Hexcel Corporation in Dublin, California, from 1987 to 1989, and at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1989 to 1990. Accumulating over 1500 flight hours, he has demonstrated his proficiency in aviation.

NASA Astronaut Career

In January 1990, the astronaut was selected into NASA's astronaut corps and underwent comprehensive spaceflight training at the NASA Johnson Space Center from July 1990 to July 1991.

Space Missions

STS-65 (1994)

The astronaut's maiden voyage into space occurred on July 8, 1994, as a Mission Specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia for the STS-65 mission. Lasting for 14 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes, the primary objective of this flight was to conduct microgravity experiments.

STS-72 (1996)

Embarking on his second space mission as a Mission Specialist, the astronaut joined the STS-72 crew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on January 11, 1996. Spanning 8 days, 22 hours, and 41 seconds, the mission focused on experiments involving deployable spacecrafts.

STS-92 (2000)

The astronaut's third and final spaceflight took place on October 11, 2000, as a Mission Specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery for the STS-92 mission. Lasting for 12 days, 21 hours, 42 minutes, and 41 seconds, the primary goal of this mission was to transport supplies and conduct assembly work on the International Space Station.

Over the course of his three space missions, the astronaut accumulated a total of 36 days, 13 hours, 38 minutes, and 22 seconds in space.

Honors and Achievements

In recognition of his contributions to space exploration, the astronaut has been awarded the NASA Space Flight Medals for his missions in 1994, 1996, and 2000.

Personal Life

The astronaut remains single and enjoys indulging in activities such as basketball, skiing, and flying airplanes in his leisure time.
