Biograpy of Joseph Richard Tanner

NASA Astronaut

Joseph Richard Tanner is an active astronaut with NASA. He was born on January 21, 1950, in Danville, Illinois, USA.

Education

Tanner completed his high school education in Danville, Illinois in 1968. In 1973, he graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Service

After graduating from university, Tanner joined the United States Navy. He served as a pilot of the A-7E aircraft in the 94th Attack Squadron, which was based on the USS Coral Sea. He later became a pilot instructor at the Pensacola Air Force Base. In 1984, Tanner began working at the NASA Johnson Space Center as an engineer and research pilot. He has accumulated over 7500 hours of flight time.

Space Activities

In March 1992, Tanner was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate. From August 1992 to August 1993, he underwent general space training at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

Space Missions

Tanner has completed three space missions:

1. STS-66 (November 3-14, 1994) - Tanner served as a mission specialist on the Atlantis space shuttle. The mission lasted for 10 days, 7 hours, 33 minutes, and 2 seconds. The primary objective of the mission was to study the relationship between the Sun and Earth's atmosphere.

2. STS-82 (February 11-21, 1997) - Tanner served as a mission specialist on the Discovery space shuttle. The mission lasted for 9 days, 23 hours, 37 minutes, and 9 seconds. The main objective of the mission was to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Tanner conducted two spacewalks during the mission, totaling 14 hours and 1 minute.

3. STS-97 (December 1-11, 2000) - Tanner served as a mission specialist on the Endeavour space shuttle. The mission lasted for 10 days, 19 hours, 57 minutes, and 24 seconds. The main objective was to deliver supplies to the International Space Station and perform assembly work. Tanner conducted three spacewalks during the mission, totaling 19 hours and 20 minutes. In total, Tanner spent 31 days, 3 hours, 7 minutes, and 35 seconds in space.

Awards

Tanner has received several awards, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the NASA Space Flight Medals for his missions in 1994, 1997, and 2000.

Personal Life

Tanner is married to Martha A. Currie and they have two children. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, hiking, and mountaineering.
