A Long Journey to Success

Les Stewart embarked on his monumental task in 1982. Sitting in front of his typewriter with a fresh sheet of paper, he began typing: "one, two, three, four, five..." and so on. Little did he know that this endeavor would consume the next 16 years and 7 months of his life. Finally, in 1998, he completed his opus, typing the words "one million" on the final page and drawing a bold full stop.

A Test of Perseverance

Throughout those long 16 years, Les Stewart persevered, breaking and replacing seven typewriters, changing 1,000 ribbons, and using 19,990 sheets of paper. Despite the grueling nature of his task, Les dedicated two hours every day to typing, averaging about three pages per day. He used only one finger to type his message to the world.

A Unique Pursuit

When asked why he undertook such a laborious endeavor, Les explained that he wasn't a particularly busy person and had little else to occupy his time. After suffering injuries in a fire, he became disabled and unable to work. His days were spent leisurely and idly. The fact that his work lacked informative or interesting content didn't bother him. Les wasn't concerned about finding readers for his creation; however, he did secure a prestigious place in the famous Guinness World Records book. Indeed, his incredible feat was completely unprecedented.

Les Stewart: The Numbers Man

In conclusion, Les Stewart, the Australian typist, holds the official record for typing numbers from 1 to 1,000,000 using words. His dedication and perseverance have earned him a well-deserved spot in the Guinness World Records book.
