Keshav Dutt: A Legendary Indian Hockey Player
Born into a family of English descent, Keshav Dutt emerged as an iconic figure in Indian hockey history.
Early Life and Career Transition
Dutt began his sporting journey as a footballer for the Bengal Nagpur Railway team. However, in 1946, a fortuitous incident at a hockey tournament led to him replacing an injured player. His impressive performance propelled him to stay in the hockey team throughout the tournament and eventually fully transition to the sport.
Olympic Dominance
Dutt's prowess on the field earned him a place in the Indian hockey team that dominated the Olympic Games in the 1950s. He became a three-time Olympic champion, triumphing in London (1948), Helsinki (1952), and Melbourne (1956). He also garnered a silver medal at the 1960 Games in Rome. Notably, he and Udham Singh are the only Indian hockey players to hold both three gold and a silver Olympic medal.
A Record-Breaking Legacy
Dutt's Olympic achievements made him a household name in India. He became the first Indian player to accumulate 100 international caps and represented his country in numerous international tournaments, including the European (1949), Malaysian (1952), Australian and New Zealand (1955), and Asian Games (1958). The Guinness Book of Records recognizes him and Udham Singh as the athletes with the highest number of Olympic medals in field hockey.
Post-Playing Career
After retiring as a player in 1965, Dutt remained involved in hockey as a manager and inspector of matches. He also served as a member of the Bengal Umpires' Committee.
Honors and Recognition
To acknowledge his exceptional contributions, Dutt received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (1971), Bharata Gaurav (2011), and Bangla Bibhushan (2012). In 2012, the Bushey Underground station in London was renamed in his honor during the Olympic Games.
