Early Life and EducationYves Camille Désiré Leterme was born on October 6, 1960, in Wervik, West Flanders, Belgium. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Catholic University of Leuven in 1981. He continued his education at the University of Ghent, graduating with a Bachelor of Political Science in 1983, a Master of Laws degree in 1984, and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) in 1985.
Political Career
Leterme began his career as an auditor at the Court of Audit. In 1997, he was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the first time, which he served in again in 1999 and 2003. He is a member of the Christian Democratic and Flemish party, which he led after the party's 2003 election defeat.
Prime Minister of Flanders
On July 20, 2004, Leterme became Prime Minister of Flanders. His government consisted of a coalition of parties including the Christian Democratic and Flemish party, the separatist New Flemish Alliance, and the Flemish Liberals and Democrats. For three years, Leterme served as Prime Minister of Flanders, pursuing a pragmatic approach to enhancing the economic and social welfare of Flanders. Under his leadership, Flanders received significant investments in infrastructure, business development, and social services. Leterme implemented strict budgetary policies, reducing the Flemish debt from its 2004 levels to zero by 2007.
Prime Minister of Belgium
In 2007, the Christian Democratic and Flemish party won the Belgian general elections. Leterme left his post as Prime Minister of Flanders on June 28, 2007, to seek election as Prime Minister of Belgium. In Guy Verhofstadt's caretaker government, he served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Budget, Transport, Institutional Reforms, and the North Sea. The formation of a new government was marked by scandals and took a record-breaking period of time for Belgium. Finally, on March 20, 2008, Leterme was appointed Prime Minister of Belgium and sworn into office. His candidacy was confirmed by the Chamber of Representatives three days later.
Resignation and Legacy
On December 19, 2008, Leterme resigned as Prime Minister amidst a financial scandal involving Fortis Bank. King Albert II accepted his resignation and that of his government on December 22, 2008. Herman Van Rompuy, the speaker of the Chamber of Representatives, succeeded Leterme. Leterme's tenure as Prime Minister was characterized by challenges, economic turmoil, and political instability.
