Biography of Daron Acemoglu

Daron Acemoglu, a Turkish and American economist of Armenian descent, was born in 1967 in Istanbul, Turkey. He comes from a family with Armenian roots. Acemoglu completed his secondary education at Galatasaray High School in Istanbul in 1986. He then went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of York in the United Kingdom. He continued his studies and earned a master's degree and a doctorate in economics from the London School of Economics. In 1992-93, Acemoglu began lecturing on economics at the London School of Economics.

Acemoglu currently holds the Charles P. Kindleberger Professorship of Applied Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a position he has held since 2004. His main research interests as an economist are in the fields of political economy, economic development, economic growth, income and wage inequality, human capital and skill development, labor economics, and economics of innovation.

In 2005, Acemoglu received the John Bates Clark Medal, an award given to the most outstanding American economist under the age of 40. This prestigious award is second in prestige only to the Nobel Prize. Despite his primary focus on dynamic models of the labor market, Acemoglu gained significant popularity for his collaborative work with James A. Robinson on the topics of democracy, dictatorship, and the influence of economic institutions on political development.

Acemoglu is a member of the Economic Growth program at the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research. He also collaborates with the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Center for Economic Performance, and the Center for Economic Policy Research. Acemoglu serves as an editor for "Econometrica" and works with publications such as the "Review of Economics and Statistics," "Journal of Economic Growth," and "Annual Review of Economics."
