Childhood and Education
Leonid Mikhaylovich Smehov was born in 1908 in Gomel, Belarus, into a family of four children. He and two of his brothers studied at VKHUTEMAS (later the Moscow Institute of Arts and Industry). However, only Lev became a professional artist, studying under Vladimir Andreyevich Favorsky.
Artistic Style
Smehov developed his unique style as a young student in Gomel. Upon arriving at VKHUTEMAS, Favorsky recognized his talent and declared him a "finished" master of graphic art. Notably, his early works showed similarities to European masters, despite the limited access to such art in Gomel at the time.
Career
Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, Smehov's drawings appeared in prominent publications such as Izvestia and Literaturnaya Gazeta. He became a lifelong contributor to Pionerskaya Pravda (for which he designed the logo), Murzilka, and Tekhnika-Molodezhi, specializing in illustrations for children and young adults.
Legacy
Smehov illustrated numerous books, including those in the "Adventure Library" series published by "Molodaya Gvardia" after World War II. His unique style made his illustrations instantly recognizable in any publication. He is considered a classic of children's book illustration.
Despite being heavily influenced by classical literature and history, Smehov's artistic excellence translated seamlessly into the realm of children's illustration. His depictions of children were universally recognized for their charm and authenticity.
