Early Life and Education
Lev Zmeyev was born in 1832 into the noble Zmeyev family, the son of Feodor Yakovlevich Zmeyev, a lieutenant in the Vyborg Regiment. Orphaned at a young age due to a cholera outbreak, he endured a difficult childhood. After attending a private boarding school in Ostrogozhsk, he was enrolled in a provincial gymnasium in the late 1840s.
Academic Career
Zmeyev graduated from Voronezh Gymnasium and Moscow University. He pursued medical studies in Europe and worked as a zemstvo physician in Korotoyak County. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, he served as an orderly in the field army. Subsequently, he taught history of medicine at the Military Medical Academy.
Medical Contributions and Research
Zmeyev made significant contributions to Russian medicine. In 1883, he defended his doctoral dissertation, "Medico-Topographical Description and Statistical Overview of the Population of Bugulminsky Uyezd, Samara Governorate."
He compiled extensive historical materials on Russian physicians, publishing works such as:
- "Dictionary of Physicians Who Received the Doctor of Medicine Degree at Imperial Moscow University before 1863" (1885)
- "Bibliographical Dictionary of Russian Physician-Writers" (1886-1889)
Zmeyev's books included:
- "The Past of Russian Medicine" (1890)- "Russian Medical Books: A Study in Our Ancient Medical Literature" (1895)
- "Readings in the Medical History of Russia" (1896)
Recognition and HonorsZmeyev's work earned him recognition from both domestic and international scientific communities. He was elected honorary member of numerous societies, including:

Other Interests and ContributionsZmeyev also published an article on the genealogy of Metropolitan Evgeny Bolhovitinov. He established scientific societies for Russian physicians and played a vital role in preserving and researching the history of medicine in Russia.
