Levon Kalantar: Armenian Theatrical Luminary
Early Life and EducationLevon Alexandrovich Kalantar was born on January 4 (16), 1891, in Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi). His father, Alexander Hayrapetian Kalantar, was a prominent public figure and journalist. Kalantar pursued his education at the Eastern Faculty of Petrograd University, graduating in 1916.
Theatrical Career
Kalantar immersed himself in the world of theater from 1916 onwards, serving as both an actor and director in various theaters across Georgia and Armenia. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Armenian theater in Tbilisi and the Sundukyan Theater in Yerevan.
From 1928 to 1930, Kalantar served as the chief director of the Baku Armenian Theater. He also directed films for the "Armenfilm" studio in 1930-31. From 1931 to 1935, he was the chief director of the Yerevan Gorky Worker's Theater.
After a brief interlude, Kalantar became the chief director of the Yerevan Stanislavsky Russian Theater from 1937 to 1943 and again from 1952 to 1959. His tenure brought a new level of artistic excellence to the theater.
Recognition and Legacy
Kalantar's exceptional contributions to Armenian theater were recognized with the title of People's Artist of the Armenian SSR in 1954 and 1959. He authored the book "The Ways of Art," published posthumously in 1963.
Levon Alexandrovich Kalantar passed away in Yerevan on October 29, 1959. His legacy as a master of theatrical art continues to inspire aspiring actors and directors in Armenia and beyond.
