Biography of Levon Stepanyan
Levon Vladimirovich Stepanyan (Armenian: Լևոն Վլադիմիրի Ստեփանյան) was born on July 28, 1950, in the village of Leninabad, Nakhichevan, Azerbaijan SSR. He is an Armenian military and political figure, holding the rank of Major General.
Education and Early Career
Levon Stepanyan completed his education at the Moscow Higher Border College in 1972. He further pursued his military studies at the V.I. Lenin Military-Political Academy in 1979.
From 1973 to 1976 and 1979 to 1991, Stepanyan served in various commanding and political positions in the Transcaucasian Border District. During this time, he showcased his dedication and leadership skills, earning him several accolades.
Political Involvement
In the years 1991 to 1992, Stepanyan became a member of the Standing Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs of the Armed Forces of Armenia in the Supreme Council of Armenia. He played a crucial role in the commission's efforts to strengthen the defense and internal affairs of Armenia.
Commanding Border Troops
From 1992 to 1993, Stepanyan held the position of Military Commissar of Armenia. In September 1993, he was appointed as the Chief of the Main Directorate of State Border Protection and the Commander of the Border Troops of the Ministry of National Security.
During his tenure, Stepanyan demonstrated exceptional professionalism and dedication to safeguarding the state borders. He was recognized for his outstanding service with the "For Distinguished Service" medal and the "For Impeccable Service" medals of the I, II, and III degrees (USSR).
Later Years and Controversy
In 2001, Stepanyan was elected as an Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in the Department of Military Sciences. However, his career took a downward turn in 2003 when he was relieved of his position by the President of Armenia. The dismissal came shortly after the arrest of his deputy, Vagan Mhitaryan, on charges of bribery and abuse of power.
