Lee De Forest, also known as the Father of Radio, was an American inventor who revolutionized the field of electronics. He is credited with inventing the triode, a vacuum tube that served as the foundation for the development of the radio, as well as the detector and amplifier.
Early Life and Education
De Forest was born on August 26, 1873, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended the Yale University and graduated in 1896 with a degree in philosophy. His doctoral dissertation was supervised by renowned physicist J. Willard Gibbs.
Career and Inventions
In 1899, De Forest joined the laboratory of the Western Electric Company in Chicago, where he began working on wireless telegraphy. He constructed an electrolytic detector called the "responder" and built a wireless telegraph to transmit messages during international yacht racing competitions.
In 1902, De Forest founded the American De Forest Wireless Telegraph Company in Jersey City. The company manufactured wireless telegraph apparatus for the US government and the Navy. It later became known as the United Wireless Telegraph Company.
De Forest installed the first radio stations at five major US Navy bases and was involved in the development of horizontal, frame, and directional antennas, as well as duplex transmission and reception.
In 1907, he established the Radiotelephone Company and secured a contract to equip US Navy ships with his wireless telephones. In 1910, De Forest conducted the first-ever musical broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera House, featuring the renowned tenor Enrico Caruso.
Later Life and Contributions
In 1911, De Forest's company went bankrupt, and he took a position as an engineer at the Federal Telegraph Company in San Francisco. He focused on improving his electron tube, which he had first developed in 1905 to enhance radio wave reception.
In 1907, De Forest obtained a patent for his "Audion," a three-electrode tube with a control grid (triode). He managed to interest the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in his invention, and in 1913, he sold them the rights to use Audion amplifiers for telephone communication.
In 1915, De Forest demonstrated the first working autogenerator using the Audion. In 1916, he organized the first broadcast of news through radio. In 1920, De Forest turned his attention to the development of sound movies, which he called "Phonofilms." He devised a practical method of photographing sound waves on the same film as the image.
De Forest was also involved in the creation of television and high-speed phototelegraphic image transmission technology.
