Early Life and Career
Lily Dagover was born in the Dutch East Indies to Dutch parents. She moved to Europe with her family at the age of ten and received her education in Tübingen, Germany. In 1913, she married actor Fritz Dagover and adopted his surname as her stage name. Her daughter Eva was born in 1914.
Lily made her film debut in 1916 and gained recognition for her roles in Fritz Lang's films in 1919. Her breakthrough came in Robert Wiene's 1920 masterpiece "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," where she played the leading female role.
Success in Silent Films
Throughout the 1920s, Lily Dagover starred in numerous silent films, working with renowned directors such as Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau. She established herself as the epitome of the "grande dame" of German cinema.
Marriage and Post-Divorce Career
In 1920, Lily divorced Fritz Dagover. She remarried in 1926 to film producer Georg Witt. Alongside her film career, she became active in theater, performing with Max Reinhardt at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin and participating in the Salzburg Festival.
Nazi Era and Post-War Success
Lily Dagover's career continued to flourish during the Nazi era and beyond. She achieved great success in Edgar Wallace's 1961 film "Der seltsame Gräfin" and continued to appear in films until the late 1970s.
