Biography of Liliana Cavani
Liliana Cavani is an Italian film director who gained worldwide fame with her film "The Night Porter" (1974). The story of the love affair between a Nazi officer and his concentration camp victim remains her most famous work to this day.
Early Life and Education
Liliana Cavani was born in 1936. She graduated from the University of Bologna and later studied at the Experimental Film Center in Rome.
Early Career
From the early 1960s, Cavani worked on a series of historical and documentary television films, including "The History of the Third Reich" and "Petain: The Vichy Process." In 1966, she directed her first feature film, "Francis of Assisi," which was released in 1972. She followed this with the historical film "Galileo."
The Night Porter
"The Night Porter" (1974) brought Cavani international acclaim. The film explored the love affair between a former Nazi officer and his former concentration camp victim years after World War II. The film's intense psychological portrayal of the characters, who defy societal and artistic conventions, created a new genre of films about fascism that challenged the ideologies of socialist countries.
Later Works
Cavani's directorial style and poetics can be seen most prominently in the film "The Skin" (1981), based on Curzio Malaparte's novel about the arrival of American troops in Italy at the end of World War II. In 1989, Cavani returned to the subject of Francis of Assisi with the film "Francesco," starring Mickey Rourke in the lead role.
