Early Life and Education
Lim Kok Thay was born into a prominent Malaysian family as the son of Lim Goh Tong, the founder of the Genting Group. He received a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of London in the United Kingdom. Subsequently, he completed an executive business program at Harvard Business School, Harvard University.
Business Career
In 1976, Lim joined the board of directors of Genting Berhad, a company founded by his father. Under his and his father's leadership, the company expanded into a conglomerate of five enterprises. In December 2003, Lim Goh Tong retired, and Lim Kok Thay became the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the group.
International Expansion
Lim Kok Thay played a pivotal role in expanding the Genting Group's global presence, particularly in the tourism and entertainment industries. He oversaw the development of successful projects such as Resorts World, Maxims, Crockfords, and Awana. He also established partnerships with international companies such as Universal Studios, Hard Rock Hotel, Premium Outlets, and Synthetic Genomics.
One of Lim's most notable projects was the development of Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, the largest casino in the United States, in collaboration with the Native American Pequot tribe. He also led the expansion of his father's flagship resort, Genting Highlands, which has been recognized as the Best Casino Resort in Asia and the World by the World Travel Awards.
UK Expansion
In 2005, Lim began expanding Genting's presence in the United Kingdom. Today, Genting UK Plc is the UK's largest casino operator, with 43 venues across the country. In 2006, Lim won the bid to build Singapore's first integrated resort on Sentosa Island. The resort, which opened in 2010, has become one of the country's top tourist destinations. It includes six themed hotels, an oceanarium museum, Southeast Asia's first Universal Studios theme park, and various other attractions.
Current Operations
Under Lim's leadership, the Genting Group currently operates three major resorts in Asia: Resorts World Genting in Malaysia, Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, and Resorts World Manila in the Philippines. These resorts are popular tourist destinations and contribute significantly to the regional tourism industry. The group also has projects in the United States, including Resorts World New York and Resorts World Miami.
Academic Honors
In December 2007, Lim was conferred an Honorary Professorship by Xiamen University. In October 2009, he became a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of Imperial College, London.
