Linas Linkevičius: A Statesman's Journey
Lithuanian Statesman and DiplomatLinas Linkevičius is a distinguished Lithuanian statesman and diplomat who has held various prominent positions in the Lithuanian government. From 2012 to 2020, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania. Additionally, he was the Minister of Defense from 1993 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2004.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1953, Linkevičius graduated from the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1983 with a degree in engineering.
Career During Soviet Era
Prior to Lithuania's independence, Linkevičius held key positions in the Communist youth organization, including Secretary of the Kaunas district committee and Head of a department in the Central Committee of the Lithuanian Communist Youth League. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the separation of the Lithuanian Komsomol from the All-Union organization in 1989.
Political Career in Independent Lithuania
With the restoration of Lithuania's independence, Linkevičius transitioned to politics. He served as a correspondent for the newspaper "Tiesa" and an advisor to the parliamentary faction of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party from 1990.
From 1992 to 1996, Linkevičius was elected as a member of the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament. During this period, he held the positions of Head of the Lithuanian Parliamentary Delegation to the North Atlantic Assembly, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the Youth Union of Labour, and columnist for the newspaper "Tiesa."
Minister of Defense
From 1993 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2004, Linkevičius served as the Minister of Defense. During his tenure, he oversaw the modernization and integration of the Lithuanian military into NATO.
Diplomatic Positions
After his second term as Defense Minister, Linkevičius held several diplomatic positions, including Ambassador and Head of Lithuania's Representation to NATO and the Western European Union (1997-2000) and Ambassador for Special Assignments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2004-2005).
From 2005 to 2011, he served as Lithuania's Permanent Representative to NATO and the North Atlantic Council.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
On December 7, 2012, Linkevičius was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. During his eight-year tenure, he played a key role in strengthening Lithuania's relations with the European Union, NATO, and other international organizations.
In 2017, Linkevičius left the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania to remain as Foreign Minister in a coalition government.
Awards and Honors
Linkevičius has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Lithuania and international diplomacy, including the Order of Three Stars from Latvia, the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas from Lithuania, the Order of the Cross of Vytis from Lithuania, the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana from Estonia, and the Presidential Order of the Radiance from Georgia.
Personal Life
Linas Linkevičius is married and has two daughters. He is fluent in Lithuanian, English, Russian, and Polish.
