Biography of Linda Ellerbee

Linda Ellerbee (born Linda Jane Smith on August 15, 1944) is an American journalist, best known for her work at NBC News, including her time as a correspondent in Washington. Ellerbee also worked as a host on Nickelodeon's "Nick News" and as a reporter and co-host on "NBC News Overnight," a program that was hailed by the judges of the duPont Columbia Awards as "possibly the best written and most intelligent news program of all time."

Early Life

Linda Ellerbee was born in Bryan, Texas. She attended River Oaks Elementary, Lanier Middle School, and Lamar High School in Houston, Texas. After high school, Ellerbee enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Career at NBC

Ellerbee began her career at NBC as a reporter for "The Today Show." She later became a regular correspondent on the short-lived program "Weekend" when it was moved from late night to prime time to compete with CBS's "60 Minutes." In each of her stories, Ellerbee would conclude with the phrase "And so it goes."

After a couple of years, Ellerbee returned as a permanent correspondent, this time on "NBC News Overnight." Her signature style on this program closely resembled her work on "Weekend." She would once again end each broadcast with the phrase "And so it goes," which would later become the title of her memoir.

During her time at NBC, Ellerbee worked with Jessica Savitch. When it became clear that Savitch had serious drug problems, Ellerbee tried to intervene, but unfortunately, it was too late.

Move to ABC and Lucky Duck Productions

In 1986, after the cancellation of "NBC News Overnight," Ellerbee moved to the competing network ABC. There, she worked as a reporter on the morning program "Good Morning America."

In 1987, Ellerbee and her partner, Rolfe Tessem, launched their own production company called "Lucky Duck Productions." They produced shows for various major networks, with one of their most notable works being "Nick News" for Nickelodeon.

Battle with Cancer

In 1992, Ellerbee was diagnosed with breast cancer. She shared her journey of fighting cancer and emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of humor even in the face of danger.
