Biography of John Alpert

American journalist John Alpert, a reporter and documentary filmmaker, was born in 1948 in Port Chester, New York. He graduated from Colgate University in 1970. Alpert is the founder of Downtown Community Television (DCTV), a television studio in New York City.

Alpert has directed several notable documentaries, including "Cuba: People," "Chinatown: Immigrants in America," "Third Avenue," "Vietnam: Gathering Stones," "One Year in the Life of Crime," "Prisoners of Rikers Island," "Papa," "Latin Kings: A Gang Story," and "Emergency Room: Baghdad." For his unique television reports and documentaries, he has received 11 National Emmy Awards and three Primetime Emmy Awards.
