Biography of Linda Stein
Early Life and CareerLinda Stein was an American music manager, producer, and real estate broker. She initially worked as a teacher but left teaching to become the producer of the rock group 'The Ramones', discovered by Danny Fields, who became one of the most influential figures in the American music industry during the 70s and 80s. Her second client was singer-songwriter Steve Forbert.
Marriage and Family
Linda Stein was married to Seymour Stein, the president of 'Sire Records' and vice president of 'Warner Bros. Records', who played a significant role in the early careers of Madonna, The Ramones, Talking Heads, and The Pretenders. The couple had two daughters and divorced in the late 70s, but maintained a friendly relationship.
Career Change and Real Estate
In the 90s, Stein transitioned from music production to real estate, specifically focusing on high-end properties. She earned the nickname 'the celebrity real estate agent' as she selected multi-million dollar apartments for clients such as Madonna, Sting, Angelina Jolie, Billy Joel, model and actress Christie Brinkley, Bruce Willis, Michael Douglas, Steven Spielberg, and Elton John.
Inspiration
According to her friend, writer Steven Gaines, Linda Stein was inspired by two movie characters: the real estate agent portrayed by Sylvia Miles, who sells an incredibly expensive apartment to Charlie Sheen's character in Oliver Stone's film 'Wall Street', and the ruthless record label executive in the film '54'.
Tragic Death and Arrest
On October 30, 2007, Linda Stein was found dead in her Manhattan apartment. The coroner classified her death as a homicide resulting from blunt force trauma to the head and neck. There were no signs of forced entry, and the house was well secured, suggesting that only someone Stein trusted could have gained access. Prior to her death, Stein had been battling breast cancer.
On November 9, 2007, Linda Stein's former personal assistant, Natavia Lowery, was arrested for her murder. It was reported that Lowery killed her boss because Stein would yell at her, blow marijuana smoke in her face, and insult her based on racial intolerance. However, the autopsy did not confirm the presence of marijuana in Stein's body. Lowery waived her Miranda rights and confessed her version of events during police questioning, which was recorded on video.
On December 13, 2007, the courtroom procedure was disrupted when Lowery's family loudly accused her daughter Mandy of Linda Stein's death. Mandy's mother approached her and said, "You know you did it."
Legal Proceedings
On May 3, 2010, Natavia Lowery was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of her employer, Linda Stein, including an additional 3 years for stealing $30,000 from Stein. As Linda Stein did not leave a will, her estate was inherited by her daughters. On December 18, 2007, their request to manage their late mother's assets was granted by the court.
Legacy
British musician Elton John expressed his intention to participate in fundraising efforts for breast cancer research in memory of Linda Stein. On April 24, 2009, Mandy Stein premiered her film 'Burning Down the House: The Rise and Fall' at the Tribeca Film Festival, dedicated to her mother's memory.
