Biography of Linette Young
Linette Young is an American woman who gained notoriety for making 400 false calls to the emergency services hotline, 911. This incessant behavior led to her being sentenced to 180 days in prison. Young resides in Los Angeles, where she began serving her sentence after undergoing a thorough psychological evaluation. The authorities wanted to ensure the mental well-being of the 43-year-old woman who had made at least 400 false emergency calls over the past couple of years.
Despite the scrutiny, it was determined that Young's mental health was intact. Her motive for making these false calls stemmed from the belief that, as a taxpayer, she had the right to utilize emergency services. The incidents began in January 2011 when a call was made to a 911 center in Los Angeles. The responding paramedics soon discovered that it was a false alarm, but little did they know that there would be hundreds more to come. Young sometimes could not restrain herself, making five or more calls to the coveted 911 number in a single day. Each time, her reasons for seeking assistance were fabricated.
Between January and September 2013, Young called for an ambulance 220 times without ever needing genuine emergency help. This behavior left the paramedics frustrated, as they understood that their duty was to aid in actual emergencies, not to confirm the absence of danger or threats to citizens' health. Unfortunately, Young held a completely opposite view, continuing to bombard emergency services with her calls.
Consequently, Young faced legal repercussions as 25 lawsuits were filed against her, resulting in her being found guilty in 12 cases. This led to her six-month prison sentence, which she vehemently disagreed with. Nevertheless, she was incarcerated, where she would not only serve her punishment but also receive psychological counseling aimed at deterring her from the compulsion to call for help without cause.
False emergency calls pose a significant problem for the 911 service, as there are many individuals, like Young, who dial the number without considering the actual presence of danger. It is hoped that high-profile cases and publicized sentences, such as Young's, will serve as a deterrent, as a six-month prison term is substantial.
In the meantime, Linette Young's name has made headlines worldwide due to her record-breaking number of false 911 calls. However, it remains uncertain whether she takes pride in this dubious achievement.
