Mastanamma, the Legendary YouTube Chef
Indian chef and oldest YouTube vlogger, Mastanamma, has passed away at the age of 107. Mastanamma gained fame through her culinary YouTube channel, Country Foods, which garnered over 1.2 million subscribers.
The Granny Vlogger
The grandmotherly vlogger cooked rustic and unique dishes on camera, including her signature 'watermelon chicken' cooked over an open fire. The video titled "Watermelon Chicken By My Granny" has been viewed almost 12 million times.
The Rise of Country Foods
The Country Foods channel was launched by her grandson and his friend in 2016 and quickly gained popularity. Mastanamma was born in the Andhra Pradesh state. In 2017, she told BBC Monitoring that she was likely 106 years old at the time, but had no birth certificate to prove it.
Rustic Cooking
In her videos, the elderly cook often stood in an open field in her remote village, with minimal cooking utensils and cutlery. Mastanamma preferred to peel vegetables with her fingernails and wielded an old-fashioned Indian knife. She served her meals on banana leaves, in traditional South Indian style.
A Culinary Star
"She became a star because of her very unique take on traditional Indian village food," said Onkar Karmalkar of BBC Marathi, who met the elderly vlogger in 2016. Karmalkar noted that Mastanamma built fires instead of using a stove and enjoyed cooking freshly caught fish from the nearby river.
A Legacy of Recipes
Country Foods confirmed the news of Mastanamma's death. Since then, fans have taken to social media to praise her recipes and mourn her passing. In social media circles, the centenarian earned the affectionate nickname "toothless granny," and for many, her name will be synonymous with 'watermelon chicken.' Her other notable dishes include a flavorful eggplant curry and a spicy kathli curry.
