Childhood and Early Life
Ling Bai, born on October 10, 1970, in Chengdu, China, has always had a passion for the arts. Her family name, "Bai," translates to "white," while her given name, "Ling," means "intelligent." With a musician father and a stage actress and ballet dancer mother, it's no surprise that Ling gravitated towards performance. Despite being a shy child, she discovered that acting allowed her to express herself in a meaningful way, connecting with others despite the strict societal norms of the time.
Military Service and Artistic Pursuits
At the age of fourteen, Ling joined her school choir and later served in the Chinese People's Liberation Army as a "soldier actress." Her three years with the army included organizing entertainment for troops stationed in Tibet and working as a field nurse. During this time, she also spent a period in a psychiatric hospital, though she claims to be healthy now. Despite her statements that "I'm not crazy," Ling has repeatedly declared that her true home is on the moon with her grandmother, claiming that "I'm not in this world. I live in my own universe, and my mind is millions of miles away."
Acting and Activism in China
In the late 1980s, Ling became an actress in a Beijing repertory theater. Her film debut came in 1985 with "On the Beach," where she portrayed a village girl who resists her father's arranged marriage. In 1989, she participated in pro-democracy protests with fellow theater actors, prompting her to emigrate to the United States in 1991. She became an American citizen in 1999.
Rise to Hollywood
In the United States, Bai pursued her acting career, studying film at New York University. She soon landed roles in Hollywood, including her first English-speaking part as the love interest of the villain in "The Crow" (1994). She also gained recognition for her role as a pragmatic Chinese lawyer in "Red Corner." In 1998, People magazine named her one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World." For the role of Anna in "Anna and the King" (1999), Ling shaved her hair, which was nearly a meter long. She also filmed scenes for the final installment of the "Star Wars" saga, "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith," but her scenes were ultimately cut. Ling attributed this to a controversial Playboy photoshoot coincidentally timed with the release of "Star Wars" in May 2005, but director George Lucas denied the claim, stating that the film's edit was complete a year prior. Her scenes as Senator Bana Breemu were eventually included on a bonus DVD. Her most recent film appearance was in the television series "Lost."
