Early Life and Education
Lissie Gröner was born on May 31, 1954, in the municipality of Langelfeld. She completed her primary and secondary education in Langelfeld.
Career in Telecommunications
In 1970, Gröner began working at Telecommunications Office No. 3 in Nuremberg.
Political Involvement in the SPD
In 1971, she joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). She was also active in the Young Socialists and Socialists in the SPD, a movement for peace and justice.
Personal Life
In 1974, Gröner married and had a son and a daughter. The couple divorced in 2001, and Gröner publicly came out as lesbian. She married her partner in Brussels in 2005.
Election to the European Parliament
In 1989, Gröner was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the SPD. She was re-elected in 1994, 1999, and 2004.
