Early Life and Education

Kaufman attended Trinity School and graduated in 1964. After high school, he went on to study at the prestigious Yale University. It was during his time at Yale that he met his future collaborator, Michael Herz. In 1966, Kaufman served as a peace corps volunteer in Africa, teaching and conducting research in a small village in Chad. It was there that he made his first short film, which featured a fifteen-minute scene of the locals slaughtering a pig. Upon showing the film to his family, their shocked reaction solidified his decision to dedicate himself fully to filmmaking. He realized that films of this nature had the power to both mesmerize and captivate audiences.

Early Career

In the early 70s, Kaufman co-founded the production company "15th Street Films" with Oliver Stone and Frank Vitale. However, Stone eventually ventured off to make his own films, and Kaufman invited his former Yale classmate, Michael Herz, to join him in making the film "Ha-Balash Ha'Amitz Shvartz." Unfortunately, the film failed to meet expectations and resulted in significant financial losses.

For a time, Kaufman worked at Cannon Pictures but soon encountered difficulties due to creative differences. He stated, "There were always problems. I always wanted to do things my way, but my superiors demanded that I conform!" In 1974, Kaufman and Herz founded Troma Studios, which is known for producing low-budget, independent, and trash films. Troma films were often released directly on video or DVD, as they were not able to secure wide theatrical distribution.

Achievements and Recognition

In 1997, Kaufman received an honorary award for his career achievements at the Raindance Film Festival. In 2003, he was honored for his contributions to the film industry at the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival. Additionally, Kaufman is a vegetarian.

Prior to becoming a trash film legend, Lloyd Kaufman made and acted in adult films.
