Lluís Claret, an acclaimed cellist from Andorra, was born into a Catalan family that had fled Spain during the Francoist regime. His initial musical instruction took place in his home country before he pursued further studies in Barcelona under Enrique Casals, the brother of the legendary cellist Pablo Casals. Claret's education continued in Rome with Radu Aldulescu, in Paris with Maurice Gendron, and in the United States with Eva Janzer at Indiana University.

International Recognition and a Distinguished Career

In 1977, Claret's talent was recognized when he became the first laureate of Mstislav Rostropovich's International Cello Competition. His victory was followed by another success in 1976 when he emerged victorious from the Pablo Casals Competition. Claret's repertoire encompasses both classical masterpieces and contemporary compositions, with a focus on the works of notable 20th-century composers such as Henri Dutilleux, Pierre Boulez, Witold Lutosławski, and Iannis Xenakis. His recordings include Bach's Six Suites, Schubert's sonatas, and works by Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Richard Strauss, all performed with pianist Alain Planès.

Collaboration and Teaching

From 1981 to 1993, Claret formed part of the Barcelona Trio. He has dedicated himself to teaching at the Barcelona and Toulouse Conservatories, sharing his expertise with aspiring young musicians.
