In his homeland, he had a long name and a short service. As a lieutenant in the Dutch fleet, without a ship or position, what else could he expect in a country experiencing the decline of its glorious maritime history? Among the young fleets of the early 19th century, the Russian fleet was considered the most ambitious, and the 23-year-old Dutchman set off for Russia. He served dutifully and was noticeable to his superiors, rising in rank and commanding ships that grew in size and importance - a cutter, a brigantine, a frigate. However, he was unable to truly prove himself as an ambitious sailor. Could he consider planned maneuvers as such, even though he received the favorable attention of Emperor Alexander I? Or the "bread and butter" position of chief of the expedition for crew management - even though many experienced seafarers failed in this role, and the young Dutchman proved himself selfless and responsible? Even the wars - first against the Swedes, and then against Napoleon - changed very little. Baltic cruises, the bombardment of Danzig - all in a day's work. In 55, Hayden became a vice-admiral, but patiently awaited his moment of glory.

Following the battle, Hayden continued to receive promotions and awards, both from Russia and foreign countries. However, no other events would surpass the significance of the Battle of Navarino in his life. Despite this, Hayden remained content, knowing that he had played a pivotal role in a historic victory.
