Lois Wilde, born Edithea Lois Wild in 1907 in Los Angeles, California, was an American actress. Her parents, William Wild and Ruth J. Gulick, divorced when she was just one year old, and she spent the next 10 years living with her mother and older sister in Brooklyn, New York.
At a young age, Lois started posing for artists and photographers such as Howard Christy and Norman Price. She also frequently participated in photoshoots for various magazines and newspapers. At the age of 10, she began dancing and was soon noticed by the Metropolitan Opera Company. Her career gained momentum as she became the winner of titles such as Miss Brighton Beach and Miss Ziegfeld, and eventually became a finalist for the Miss America pageant in 1923.
In the 1920s, Lois started appearing more frequently in Broadway productions, using the pseudonym Lois Wild. However, her acting career was often interrupted by her constant photoshoots for magazines. It seemed like the young actress was on the verge of making it big in Hollywood, but unfortunately, that never happened. Lois was involved in a car accident and suffered multiple injuries.
After being discharged from the hospital, Lois decided to move back to Los Angeles, where she believed she could rehabilitate faster. For several years, she played small roles in low-budget films until she started appearing in westerns. In 1936, she starred alongside Gene Autry in the film "The Singing Cowboy." Over the following months, Lois Wilde appeared in films such as "Caryl of the Mountains," "Undersea Kingdom," "Wildcat Trooper," "Hopalong Rides Again," and "Danger Valley."
In the summer of 1938, Lois was once again involved in a car accident, breaking her neck and sustaining significant injuries. After this incident, she rarely appeared on screens and worked as a nurse in a plastic surgery clinic.
Lois Wilde was married four times. Her first husband was Leslie Sherriff, followed by William Snow. The identity of her third husband remains a mystery to the press. Her fourth husband was Gilbert Buck, with whom she lived until his death in 1986. After losing her husband, Lois moved to Massachusetts, where her only daughter lived. On February 16, 1995, Lois Wilde passed away in North Attleboro.
In one of her interviews, Lois said, "When I was a child, other kids didn't want to play with me... I became famous, but it didn't change anything... Nobody will ever know who I truly am." Unfortunately, she was right, and very few people remember the name of the actress who once promised to become the next Hollywood star.
