Biography of Laurent Garnier

Laurent Garnier is a French techno musician, producer, and DJ, known as Choice. He is also the co-founder of the label F-Communications and a radio host.

Early Years

In 1984, Garnier started working as a waiter at the French Embassy in London. He began playing with DJ Nelson aka DJ Stan at a French club and then moved to Manchester in 1986, where his DJ career took off.

DJ Career

In 1987, Garnier started mixing music at the Haçienda club in Manchester under the pseudonym DJ Pedro. In 1988, he had to return to France to complete his military service. During this time, he visited New York and met the legendary music producer Frankie Knuckles.

Returning to France in the early 90s, Garnier continued to thrive in the blossoming rave and DJ scene. He took over the popular Parisian club Wake Up Club and began making his own music. He released the track "French Connection" and the compilation album A Bout de Souffle for the label FNAC.

Founding F-Communications

After FNAC went bankrupt, Garnier co-founded his own label, F Communications, with Eric Morand, who also worked at FNAC. His first album, "Shot in the Dark," was released in 1995. His second album, "30," came out in 1997 and included one of Garnier's best-selling singles, "Crispy Bacon." In 1998, the retrospective album "Early Works" was released.

Worldwide Success

In the following years, Garnier actively toured the world as a DJ, earning global fame. In the late 1990s, he returned to producing music. His album "Unreasonable Behavior," released in early 2000, featured one of his most famous songs, "The Man with the Red Face."

In 2006, a compilation of Garnier's best works, remixes, and previously unreleased compositions, titled "Retrospective," was released on F-Com. In 2007, a CD featuring live performances by Garnier with Vesseltoft, Philippe Nado, and Benjamin Rippert, titled "Public Outburst," was released.

Legacy and Influences

Garnier is considered one of the best DJs in the world by authoritative publications such as "The List." He popularizes electronic music to a wide audience and was the first electronic musician to perform at the classical music concert hall Salle Pleyel in Paris in 2010. He also composed the music for the ballet "Suivront mille ans de calme" by French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj.

Garnier's passion for DJing is evident in his own words: "I never had any doubts that one day I would become a DJ. Back then, I had a vague idea of what it meant. In my understanding, a DJ had to play the best music, aiming to charm and make the audience happy and dance wildly."
