Early Life and Cuban Career
Lorens Alfonso Dominguez was born on May 28, 1995, in Cuba to a humble family. Growing up in a competitive boxing environment, Dominguez ranked as the third best boxer in his homeland, often overshadowed by higher-ranked athletes despite consistently defeating them in bouts.
Transition to Azerbaijan
In 2018, Dominguez made the pivotal decision to join the Azerbaijan boxing team, citing fierce competition and limited opportunities for non-top-ranked boxers in Cuba. Additionally, the attractive salary offered by Azerbaijan contributed to his choice.
Triumph at the European Games
Dominguez's first major international success came at the 2019 European Games in Minsk, where he captured the gold medal in the 81 kg weight category. He displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament, defeating Ukraine's Stepan Hretsul, Belarus' Mikhail Dauhaliavets, Belgium's Ziad El Mohor, Italy's Simone Fiori, and Great Britain's Benjamin Whittaker in succession.
Olympic Bronze and World Championship Title
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Dominguez achieved a remarkable bronze medal in the 81 kg category, becoming the first Azerbaijani boxer to stand on the Olympic podium. He overcame resilient opponents from Uzbekistan and Turkey before falling to Cuba's Arlen Lopez in the semi-finals. In 2021, Dominguez ascended to the top of the world at the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, capturing the gold medal in the 86 kg weight class.
European Bronze and Olympic Silver
In 2024, Dominguez secured a bronze medal at the European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. He narrowly missed out on a gold medal in the Olympic Games in Paris, where he reached the semi-finals and ultimately settled for silver after losing to Uzbekistan's Lazizbek Mullojonov. Despite the result, Dominguez became the first Azerbaijani boxer to win medals at two different Olympic Games.
Recognition and Personal Life
Dominguez's achievements have earned him widespread recognition in Azerbaijan. In 2024, President Ilham Aliyev awarded him the Order of the Second Degree "For Service to the Homeland" for his contributions to the nation's sporting success. In his personal life, Dominguez married an Azerbaijani woman named Nigyar in 2021. Apart from boxing, he enjoys music and singing.
