Biography of Loren Cameron

Loren Rex Cameron, an American photographer, transgender activist, and artist, is well-known for his works on homosexual and transgender themes. Born in 1959 in Pasadena, California, Loren grew up on a farm in Arkansas after his mother passed away. He described himself as a rebellious child, leaving school at the age of 16 due to the hostility he faced from the townspeople towards his lesbian identity.

In 1979, Cameron moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he became an active member of the lesbian community. At the age of 26, he became fully aware that his female body did not bring him happiness. This realization marked the beginning of his transition from female to male, coinciding with his exploration of photography. Cameron fearlessly captured his own journey of transformation, from womanhood to manhood, as well as the experiences of other transgender individuals.

His groundbreaking documentary series, "Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits," was first published by Cleis Press in 1996. The series received critical acclaim and earned Cameron the prestigious Lambda Literary Award. While Cameron has published numerous other works, this book remains his most notable publication to date.

Cameron's photographs have been exhibited in various cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, and Mexico City. His images have been featured in books such as "Transgender Warriors" and "Constructing Masculinity: Discussions in Contemporary Culture," as well as in various magazines. Cameron has also posed for renowned photographers, such as Daniel Nicoletta and Howard Shatz.

In addition to his photography, Cameron has become a highly sought-after lecturer, sharing his insights on body transformation at universities and public venues across the United States. He has spoken at Smith College, Harvard, Cornell University, the University of California at Berkeley, Penn State, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Cameron has been featured in documentaries and television programs on channels like Discovery Health Channel and National Geographic Channel. With five books and numerous articles to his credit, Cameron has gained international recognition for his candid portraits of transgender individuals.

"I wanted the world to see us, I mean really see us," Cameron explains his motivation for photographing transgender individuals. His portraits, sometimes shocking and sometimes serenely beautiful, have brought global attention to the experiences of transgender men and women.

Ironically, it is difficult to imagine that the bald, mustached, tattooed man in a cowboy shirt and hat was once a woman. However, Cameron never felt or identified as a woman.
