Colita's Early Life and Education

Colita, the pseudonym of Spanish photographer Isabel Steva Hernández, was born in Barcelona in 1940. She began her photographic career in 1961 as a lab technician and stylist for Xavier Miserachs and Ribalta. Her initial passion was dance photography, specifically flamenco, but she later expanded her work to include portraiture and photojournalism.

Colita's Collaborations with Avant-Garde Movements

Colita was an integral part of the Catalan cultural scene. Her association with the Barcelona Gauche Divine, a group of writers, photographers, and other artists, led to her becoming their official photographer. She collaborated with directors Vicente Aranda and Jaime Camino on film projects at the Escola de Cine de Barcelona.

Colita's Role in the Nova Cançó Movement

Colita's work played a significant role in the movement. She captured portraits of singers such as Joan Manuel Serrat, documenting the rise of the Catalan nueva canción (new song) movement. Her photographs were published in major magazines, including Siglo XX, Destino, and Interviú.

Colita's Stylistic Influences and Legacy

Stylistically, Colita's work drew inspiration from the Barcelona School of photography. She was considered a versatile photographer, renowned for her dynamic compositions and capturing the essence of her subjects. Her photographs are part of the collection at the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

Colita passed away on December 31, 2023, at the age of 83, due to peritonitis. Her work continues to be celebrated and exhibited, solidifying her legacy as one of the most influential photographers of the late 20th century.
