Lars Crusebjörn: Swedish Baron and Admiral

Lars Eriksson Crusebjörn (1615-1676) was a Swedish baron, member of the Privy Council, and Admiral-General.

Early Life and Career

Born in 1615, Crusebjörn commenced his career in the Bergskollegium (Mining Board). In 1649, he was appointed Landshövding (Governor) of the Province of Åbo and Björneborg. Crusebjörn's subsequent appointments included Landshövding of Dalarna (1655), Government Commissioner in Trondheim (1658), and member of the Privy Council (1660).

Baronial Title and Military Service

In 1654, Crusebjörn was elevated to the rank of baron. When the Dano-Swedish War erupted in 1675, he was appointed Admiral-General despite his lack of naval experience.

Battle of Öland and Death

On June 1, 1676, Crusebjörn commanded the Swedish fleet against the combined Danish-Dutch fleet near the island of Öland. During the Battle of Öland, he ordered a maneuver that resulted in the capsizing of his flagship, the "Stora Kronan." A subsequent explosion in the ship's powder magazine sent it skyward, killing Crusebjörn and approximately 800 men.
