Biography of Miguel Grau

Early Life and Career

Miguel Grau, an admiral and national hero of Peru, was born in the city of Piura on July 27, 1834. At the age of 9, he began his seafaring career as a young sailor on the trading ship "Tescua". Over the course of ten years, he traveled to many parts of the world and sailed on different ships.

Military Career

In May 1854, Miguel Grau's military career began in the Peruvian Navy when he took command of the ship "Huáscar". On April 12, 1867, he married Dolores Nuñez in Lima, and they had ten children. The family lived at 172 Lescano Street in Lima, in a house that is now known as the "Grau House" after its restoration.

Political Career

In June 1876, Grau was elected as a deputy in the Peruvian Parliament. Admiral Grau reached the pinnacle of his fame posthumously, following a victorious five-month naval campaign led by him from May to October 1879. It was during this campaign that Admiral Grau lost his life in a decisive battle on October 8, 1879.

Legacy

In accordance with Law No. 23856 dated May 24, 1984, the place of Admiral Grau's heroism was named "El Mar de Grau" (The Sea of Grau). Admiral Grau's remains are preserved in the Heroes Mausoleum of the Angels Cemetery in Lima and at the Peruvian Naval School.
