Early Life and Swimming Career
Birth and Family:Lorraine Joyce Crapp was born on May 20, 1938, in Sydney, Australia. Her father was a member of the Royal Australian Air Force.
Early Success:
In 1952, Crapp competed in the Australian Swimming Championships, finishing second in the 880-yard event behind Judy-Joy Davies. Two years later, she made her breakthrough at the 1954 Commonwealth Games, winning gold medals in both the 110-yard and 440-yard freestyle events.
Olympic Triumphs
Melbounre 1956:At the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Crapp achieved remarkable success. She won gold in the 400m freestyle and as part of Australia's 4x100m freestyle relay team. Additionally, she earned a silver medal in the 100m freestyle, finishing behind fellow Australian Dawn Fraser.
Post-Retirement Honors:
Following her retirement from competitive swimming in 1960, Crapp married Dr. Bill Thurlow. She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1972 for her outstanding achievements. In 1998, she was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia. Crapp also received the Centenary Medal and the Australian Sports Medal.
