Cordes began his studies at the University of Arizona in 2011, majoring in Physiology. He joined the university's swim team, the "Arizona Wildcats," and achieved great success. Cordes won five gold medals at the national championship of the Collegiate Swimming Association from 2012 to 2014. In 2013, he was recognized as the association's swimmer of the year.
