Lothar Kurbjuweit: Football Player and Manager
Early Life and Playing CareerBorn on November 6, 1950, in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany, Lothar Kurbjuweit began his football journey with local club FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. In 1969, he moved to FC Carl Zeiss Jena, where he would spend the majority of his playing career.
Kurbjuweit played as a defender for Jena, making 408 appearances and scoring 39 goals. He helped the club win three East German Cups (1972, 1974, 1980) and finish as runners-up in the East German Championship five times (1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1981).
International Career
Kurbjuweit made his debut for the East German national team in 1970. He went on to represent his country 61 times, scoring three goals. He was part of the team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics and the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. Kurbjuweit also played in the 1974 World Cup, where East Germany famously drew 1-1 with West Germany.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 1983, Kurbjuweit began his coaching career as an assistant at FC Karl Zeiss Jena. In 1984, he became the first-team manager and led the club to a seventh-place finish in the East German Championship.
Kurbjuweit later coached FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt and returned to Jena as president in 1996. In 2005, he joined 1. FC Nürnberg, where he worked as a youth coach.
