Louis de Berton de Crillon
Education and Early CareerLouis de Berton de Crillon was born in the early 16th century in Avignon, France. He received his education in the city and joined the military in 1557. Serving under Claude de Guise, Crillon distinguished himself during the sieges of Calais and Guines.
The Huguenot Wars
A fervent Catholic, Crillon played a significant role in the Huguenot Wars. He fought in the battles of Dreux, Saint-Denis, Jarnac, and Moncontour. After the signing of the Peace of Saint-Germain, he participated in the defense of Europe against the Ottoman Turks, notably at the Battle of Lepanto.
Repression and Resistance
Crillon openly condemned the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, but nevertheless took part in the Siege of La Rochelle (1572-1573). He accompanied Henry III to Poland and was appointed Governor of Lyon. During the War of the League, Crillon sided with the king and forced the surrender of La Ferté. He was appointed Captain of the Guards and a member of the royal council.
General-Colonel of Infantry
In 1586, Crillon conquered Provence. He became renowned for his loyalty and bravery, earning the nickname "Brave Crillon." Notably, he refused to assassinate the Duke of Guise at the behest of Henry III.

Louis de Berton de Crillon served as the General-Colonel of the French infantry. His military prowess and unwavering principles made him one of the most respected and legendary generals of the 16th century.
