Revolution and Exile
With the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Clermont was forced to flee his homeland. Like many other émigrés, he sought refuge in Russia, where he was warmly received at the imperial court. During his time in Russia, Clermont became an avid observer of the country's agricultural practices, which ignited his interest in agronomy.
Membership in the Free Economic Society
Clermont became a member of the prestigious Free Economic Society, a scientific organization dedicated to promoting economic and agricultural development. Through this membership, he gained access to a wealth of knowledge and resources that further fueled his passion for agronomy.
Launch of the "Journal of Agriculture"
In 1799, Clermont embarked on a significant literary endeavor by launching the "Journal of Agriculture." This publication, dedicated to Emperor Paul I of Russia, featured original French text written by Clermont and a parallel Russian translation by Mikhail Borodavkin. The journal covered a wide range of agricultural topics, including crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and land management.
