Early Life and EducationClaudia Ruiz Massieu is a Mexican politician and stateswoman who holds a degree in architecture. She is a member of the National Renewal Movement, a political party in Mexico.
Political Career
Massieu's political career began in 2006, when she joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). She served as a federal deputy in the LX Legislature of the Mexican Congress from 2006 to 2009.
In 2012, Massieu was elected senator for the state of Tabasco in the LXIV Legislature of the Mexican Congress. She served as a senator until 2018, representing the National Renewal Movement.
Senate Presidency
On September 1, 2019, Massieu was elected President of the Senate of Mexico with 110 votes in favor, one vote against, and two abstentions. She is the first woman to hold this position since the Senate was established in 1824.
As Senate President, Massieu has played a key role in advancing important legislation, including the National Development Plan and the budget for 2020. She has also been a vocal advocate for gender equality and women's rights.
