Biography of Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton

Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton was a French naturalist who was a member of the French and St. Petersburg Academies. He was born on May 29, 1716, in Montbard, France.

Contributions to Natural History

Daubenton is best known for his collaboration with Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, on the monumental work "Histoire Naturelle" (Natural History). From 1749 to 1767, he worked as a co-author with Buffon on this multi-volume project. In the first 15 volumes, Daubenton provided comparative anatomical descriptions of 182 species of mammals, more than 50 of which had never been dissected before. He also discovered and described seven new species of bats.

Daubenton revolutionized the field of comparative anatomy by comparing the organs and skeletons of different animals. His meticulous observations and detailed illustrations greatly advanced our understanding of the animal kingdom.

Accomplishments in Animal Husbandry

In addition to his work in natural history, Daubenton was also involved in animal husbandry. He conducted experiments in acclimatizing domestic animals and successfully bred a new breed of Merino sheep. His expertise in sheep breeding led to the publication of a comprehensive guide on sheep farming in 1782.

Director of the Jardin des Plantes

After Buffon's death in 1788, Daubenton was appointed as the director of the Jardin des Plantes, a botanical garden and research institution in Paris. He strived to continue Buffon's legacy by expanding the garden's collections and promoting scientific research.
