Soren Abildgaard

Early Life and FamilyNicolai Abraham Abildgaard was a Norwegian-born Danish naturalist, writer, and illustrator. He was the son of the painter and architect Nikolaj Abildgaard, and the brother of the veterinarian Peter Christian Abildgaard.
Artistic Education
Abildgaard studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He excelled in painting and drawing, particularly in capturing the details of ancient monuments. Many of his precise drawings are now preserved in the University Library in Copenhagen.
Scientific Contributions
Abildgaard played a significant role in completing the systematic reference guide "Zoologiae Danicae Prodromus," which had been initiated by Otto Friedrich Müller. Along with Martin Heinrich Rathke and others, he contributed to this landmark publication documenting the zoology of Denmark and Norway.
Legacy
While the volumes of "Zoologiae Danicae Prodromus" published after Müller's death did not quite reach the standards of "Flora Danica," Abildgaard's contributions were nevertheless notable. He made significant contributions to the field of natural history, and his illustrations continue to be valuable resources for researchers today.
