Born on September 6, 1908, in Nottingham, England, Lewis Essen was a brilliant experimental physicist renowned for his pioneering work in quartz and atomic clocks.

Education and Early Career

Essen completed his studies at the University of London in 1928. In 1929, he joined the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington.

Quantum Metrology and Microwave Spectroscopy

Essen's research interests spanned quantum metrology and microwave radiospectroscopy, with a particular focus on time and frequency standards, radio frequency measurements, and the speed of light.

Quartz and Atomic Clocks

Essen's groundbreaking achievements include the invention of quartz clocks and atomic clocks. In 1955, he created the first atomic frequency (time) standard based on a beam of cesium atoms. This breakthrough enabled the comparison of atomic frequencies with the astronomical unit of time. In 1958, his work led to the establishment of a time service based on the atomic frequency standard.

Recognition and Honors

Essen's contributions to atomic frequency standards and their practical applications were widely recognized. He received the C. Boyce Prize in 1957. In 1959, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR awarded him the A.S. Popov Gold Medal.

Membership in the Royal Society

Quantum Rings
