The Life of Louis De Geer: Sweden's First Prime Minister
Early Life and EducationLouis De Geer was born into an aristocratic Swedish family and began his political career as a member of the Riksdag of the Estates in 1851. He received a legal education and became a member of the Göta Court of Appeals in 1855.
Ascent to Power
In 1858, De Geer was appointed First Minister of Justice, one of the two leaders of the Swedish government. He played a key role in introducing a two-chamber elected Riksdag, which he entered as a member in 1867. After a brief period of retirement, he returned as First Minister of Justice in 1875.
Premiership and Resignation
On March 20, 1876, De Geer became Sweden's first Prime Minister, a position he held until 1880. During his tenure, he simultaneously served as Minister of Justice until 1879. On April 19, 1880, De Geer resigned after the failure of his proposed defense reform.
Post-Prime Ministerial Career
From 1881 to 1888, De Geer served as Chancellor of both Uppsala and Lund Universities. He was also a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Swedish Academy from 1862 until his death.
Legacy
In addition to his political accomplishments, Louis De Geer wrote several books of memoirs and works on economics. He left a lasting legacy as the first Prime Minister of Sweden and a prominent figure in Swedish politics and academia.
