Karl Nehammer: A Political Profile
Karl Nehammer, an Austrian politician, is the current Federal Chancellor of Austria and the leader of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP).
Education and Military Service
Born in Vienna, Nehammer attended the Kalksburg College and the Amerlingstrasse Gymnasium, graduating in 1992. He completed his military service as a volunteer, extending his duty until 1996, and was discharged as a lieutenant.
Career in the ÖVP
In 2007, Nehammer joined the ÖVP headquarters, rising through the ranks from head of the service and mobilization department to director of the party academy in Lower Austria. He was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Austrian Trade Union Federation in 2015 and its Secretary General from 2016 to 2018.
Member of Parliament
Nehammer entered the National Assembly in 2017, representing a Viennese constituency. He participated in the ÖVP's defense negotiations during government formation and was appointed deputy head of the ÖVP parliamentary faction.
Ministerial Roles
In January 2018, Nehammer became Secretary General of the ÖVP, succeeding Elisabeth Köstinger. He also replaced Stefan Steiner as spokesperson for integration and migration in September 2018. He was elected to the federal parliament under the ÖVP in 2019.
On January 7, 2020, Nehammer was appointed Minister of the Interior.
Federal ChancellorOn December 6, 2021, following the resignation of Sebastian Kurz and Alexander Schallenberg, Nehammer was nominated by the ÖVP presidium as party leader and Chancellor of Austria. President Alexander van der Bellen appointed him as Chancellor on December 6, 2021.
Personal Life
Nehammer is married to Katharina Nehammer, the former press secretary to former Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka. They have two children.
