Early Life and Education
Louis Godart was born in Belgium but holds dual Italian and Belgian citizenship. After completing his secondary education at the Collège de Bellevue in Dinant, he began his studies at the University of Leuven in 1963. In 1967, he graduated with a degree in Literature and Philosophy, specifically Classical Philology.
Academic Career and Research
Godart went on to earn his Ph.D. in Literature and Philosophy from the Free University of Brussels in 1971. In 1977, he received a second doctoral degree in Humanities and Letters from the Sorbonne in Paris. His research focuses on Mycenaean Linear B tablets and Aegean scripts.
Archaeological Excavations
In 1982, Godart established an archaeological expedition on the site of Apoudoulou in Crete. This joint venture between the University of Federico II in Naples and the Greek Ministry of Culture aimed to explore the Mycenaean civilization.
Contributions to the Field
Godart has organized numerous national and international conferences on philology and archaeology, including the 2nd International Congress of Mycenologists held in Naples in 1992. He is considered a leading authority on Mycenaean civilization and has published seminal works on the subject.
